WEATHERMATE™ Flexible Flashing is a selfadhering fully adhered flashing that conforms to curved surfaces to provide a tear resistant seal that resists water intrusion around windows and doors. It is part of the complete WEATHERMATE™ Weather Barrier Solutions lineup from Dow – products designed to enhance the performance of the building envelope.
WEATHERMATE™ Flexible Flashing combines a white creped high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film facer with a butyl rubber adhesive that forms a strong mechanical and chemical bond to most building materials. A polymeric-coated kraft paper release liner provides a more consistent peel than plain paper liners.
WEATHERMATE™ Flexible Flashing contains no asphalt. The butyl rubber adhesive technology, a key component of this flashing, is considered superior to asphalt adhesives in compatibility with commonly used building envelope caulking materials, insulated and noninsulated sheathings, housewraps and window casing materials.
Minimum application temperature: 40°F (4.4°C). WEATHERMATE™ Flexible Flashing may be left exposed to sunlight up to 120 days.
For best adhesion performance, apply WEATHERMATE™ Flexible Flashing at air and surface temperatures of 40°F (4.4°C) or above. A spray adhesive such as 3M High Strength 90 is recommended if applying WEATHERMATE™ Flexible Flashing directly to OSB or other surfaces where additional adhesion may be required.
Prepare substrate surface as necessary to ensure it is clean, dry and free of frost, dirt, dust, grease/oil, debris and other contaminates that may interfere with adhesion. Remove any loose or spalled areas along with nails, sharp protrusions or any other conditions that may affect a smooth flat adhesive bond to the substrate.
Cut flashing strips into easily handled lengths. Peel white plastic release film from the adhesive, position against substrate and without wrinkling or stretching, press firmly into place with a hand roller or smoothing tool. It is important to apply pressure to ensure strong long term bond to the substrate. Do not stretch flashing or force changes in the directional line of application as this can cause wrinkling and channels that prevent a smooth tight seal to the substrate. Once an adhesive bond has been established, it may be difficult to reposition the flashing without affecting sealing and adhesion capability.
